I Love Hong Kong Association 2025 Chinese Virtues Primary School "Filial Piety" Speech Contest
1. Purpose
Knowledge (discrimination ability), emotion (inner experience), will (inner strength), and action (outer behavior) are the essential elements for cultivating students' moral character. The speech competition aims to strengthen young people's attention to, understanding of, and practice of the Chinese virtue of "filial piety," enhance students' discernment of the connotations of "filial piety" ("knowledge"), and further encourage students to practice it in daily life ("action"). This, in turn, promotes family harmony and social harmony.
Participants are required to demonstrate through speeches how to practice traditional virtues in modern life, such as respecting elders, caring for family members, and expressing gratitude. This aims to promote students' awareness of current social issues and the importance of cultural inheritance, and to stimulate their creativity and teamwork in the process of problem-solving.
2. Theme: Filial Piety
Filial piety is a traditional virtue of the Chinese nation and a core value of social ethics. Of all virtues, filial piety comes first. Parents' selfless dedication, love, and care for their children are a duty and responsibility that children should fulfill. In daily life, we should do our best to show respect and care for our parents.
Zengzi said, "The greatest filial piety is to honor one's parents; the next is to not disgrace them; and the lowest is to provide for them."
This explains the levels of "filial piety." Serving one's parents is the foundation of "filial piety"; being careful in one's words and actions, neither bringing shame upon one's parents nor disobeying their wishes, and patiently admonishing them if their instructions are flawed to avoid leading them into injustice, is the true essence of "filial obedience"; establishing oneself in a virtuous and benevolent manner, earning praise from others, and making one's parents respected, is the highest level of "filial piety." "Filial piety," whether it be respect, care, obedience, reverence, support, or inheritance, should all come from the heart and be consistently upheld.
3. Eligibility for Participation
Each primary school may send a maximum of two students to participate in the competition. All participants will receive a certificate of participation in the Inter-School Speech Competition on the Inheritance of Chinese Cultural Virtues.
4. Competition Language
The speech must be delivered in Cantonese and must last 3 minutes.
